The Basics of Math—Made Clear

Basic Math introduces students to the basic concepts of mathematics, as well as the fundamentals of more tricky areas. These 30 fantastic lectures are designed to provide students with an understanding of arithmetic and to prepare them for Algebra(代数) and beyond.

The lessons in Basic Math cover every basic aspect of arithmetic. They also look into exponents(指数), the order of operations, and square roots. In addition to learning how to perform various mathematical operations, students discover why these operations work, how a particular mathematical topic relates to other branches of mathematics, and how these operations can be used practically.

Basic Math starts from the relatively easier concepts and gradually moves on to the more troublesome ones, so as to allow for steady and sure understanding of the material by students. The lectures offer students the chance to “make sense” of mathematical knowledge that may have seemed so frightening. They also help students prepare for college mathematics and overcome their anxiety about this amazing—and completely understandable—field of study.

By the conclusion of the course, students will have improved their understanding of basic math. They will be able to clear away the mystery(神秘性) of mathematics and face their studies with more confidence than they ever imagined. In addition, they will strengthen their ability to accept new and exciting mathematical challenges.

Professor H. Siegel, honored by Kentucky Educational Television as “the best math teacher in America,” is a devoted teacher and has a gift for explaining mathematical concepts in ways that make them seem clear and obvious. From the basic concrete ideas to the more abstract problems, he is master in making math lectures learner-friendlier and less scary.

With a PhD in Mathematics Education from Georgia State University, Dr. Siegel teaches mathematics at Central Arizona College. His courses include various make-up classes and a number of lectures for future primary school teachers.

If the course fails to provide complete satisfaction to you, you can easily exchange it for any other course that we offer. Or you can get your money back.

56. What does the course Basic Math mainly cover?

A. Algebra. B. College Mathematics.

C. Arithmetic. D. Mathematics Education.

57. What benefits can students expect from Basic Math?

A. Stronger imaginative ability.

B. Additional presentation skills.

C. More mathematical confidence.

D. Greater chances of becoming teachers.

58. What can we learn about Professor H. Siegel?

A. He is a guest lecturer at Kentucky Educational Television.

B. He is to deliver 30 lectures in Basic Math.

C. He works in Georgia State University.

D. He specializes in training teachers.

59. Where is the passage most likely to have been taken from?

22. B。 根据第二部分中的what seems to have more of an effect is the chaotic environmentsthat many low-income kids grow up in可知,Paul Tough认为生活环境对贫穷孩子的影响更大。

23. C。 I don't think it's quite true that failure itself helps us succeed.In fact ...

根据最后一部分中的what I'm more concerned about is his character可知,Paul Tough现在更加关注孩子的性格培养。

根据第一段中的he painted his first mural, dinosaurs, on the headboard of hisparents' bed可知,怀兰的第一幅壁画是在他父母卧室的床头板上创作的。

26. D。 He explains that through his mind's eye he can look at a blankcanvas and form a picture of the finished mural in his mind可知,通过“头脑中的眼睛”,怀兰可以想象出他的成品是什么样的。

27. A。 Wyland might just be the best friend a whale could have可知,这里指怀兰努力保护的鲸鱼也许并不知道“怀兰或许是它们最好的朋友”。

根据第三段中的there would be 14 percent fewer child marriages及64 percent fewer girls would be locked into marriage at an age whenthey should still be in school不难看出,这些数据说明了教育能够防止童婚。

根据倒数第二段中的used education to build her female students' confidence and toencourage them to stand up for their rights可知,Khalique是一位为女性权利奋战的斗士。

根据第一段中的people under 35 are now demanding food that's fresh and healthful —as well as fast及第二段中的That's good newsfor ...

People were happy and pleased to come here and get their meals, andI think that's their right可知,McGhee认为人们有权利选择去哪里购买食物,由此可推测,她对于那些禁卖条令很不满。

再根据本空后的no correlation, only a small correlation及More is not better可知,本空应该是说“一些老师和家长认为布置很多作业有好处”。

40. C。根据本段中的has limited homework, keeping to the “10 minute rule.”及assignhomework only when you feel the assignment is valuable不难看出,“一些学校已经采取措施改善(作业多的)问题”。

41. B。根据本空前后的hard work及feel so good可以看出,本空前后为转折关系,故but符合此处语境。

She called Logan's aunt back可知,打电话的是Logan的“姨妈(aunt)”。

50. B。51. A。根据本段中的angry及we were taking advantage of her family's terrible tragedy可推测,由于作者和朋友并没有把自己帮助Logan的“计划(plan)”告诉Logan的父母,所以Logan的姨妈认为作者和朋友是在利用她家的惨事赚取同情,为“他们自己(ourselves)”谋利。

53. C。本句中的I was a child ...

I still devote myself to helping及I'll be a lot more careful可知,作者仍然全力以赴帮助他人,“但是(However)”他会更加谨慎。

Recently a survey has been done to find outthe average number of books each person reads every year in Israel, Japan,Iceland, France and China. According to the survey, Israel comes first with 64books; Japan, second with 40. Iceland ranks the third with 24, while Francecomes fourth with 11. It's a pity that China comes last with a miserable 0.7.

The survey shows there's a great differencein terms of people's reading rate in different countries, and Chinese people inparticular lack the good habit of reading.

In my view, this is a very serious problem.Knowledge is now recognized as the driving force behind economic growth. If wedon't read, how can we acquire the knowledge necessary to keep up with othercountries?

Good morning, everyone!

It is a great honour for me to stand hereand deliver my speech. My topic today is “Set your goal and take action!”

As the saying goes, “Set goals. Reach them.Set new goals. This is the quickest road to success.” The first step towardssuccess is to decide on your goal and get started.

Take myself for example. When I enteredsenior high school, I set a goal for myself. I wanted to become one of the topstudents in my class. So I always worked hard at my lessons. My efforts paidoff because I was trying really hard and never gave up in the face ofdifficulty.

If you are aware of your goal and try yourbest, you will make it come true!

That's all. Thank you!

From the text…,According to…,True/not true,划线词语、句子,简单计算、排列事件顺序、识图等。

有的是通过加上相应的词语限制,如涉及到数量时常用many,almost all,nearly,more than,over,only a few,normally等限制。

What' s the topic/subject of the text/the second paragraph?

What is stated in…? The text is cheifly concerned with_______。

The story suggests that___________. It can be inferred that_____________.

The story implies that _____________. It can be concluded that __________.

 We can learn that _______________.

 ①利用构词法猜词;

同时特别留心某些词语,例如:or, that is, in other words, including, although, but, or, even if, on the other hand, on the contrary, other than, rather than, more than, instead of等词语之后的内容。
