To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor; you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching, in order to make its meaning clear.
Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit still before his class: he stands the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality (音色) and the musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.
The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn?t mean that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher?s work and the actor?s. The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand (预先). What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.
A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don?t understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to meet the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.

6. Why is it that some good teachers are unable to play well on the stage ?

7. Which of the following is true ?
A. Teachers he to learn by heart what they are going to say in class .

To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor; you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching, in order to make its meaning clear.

I he known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage-play because they could not keep strictly to what another had written.

Can a small group of drones guarantee the safety and reliability of railways and, at the same time, help railway operators se billions of euros each year? That is the very likely future of lying today's "eyes in the sky" technology to making sure that the millions of kilometres of rail tracks and infrastructure worldwide are safe for trains on a 24/7 basis.
Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could do precisely the same thing to inspect railway lines and other vital aspects of rail infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points. The more regularly they can be inspected, the more railway safety, reliability and on-time performance will be improved. Costs would be cut and operations would be more efficient across the board.
That includes huge sings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway personnel safety. It is calculated that European railways alone spend roximately 20 billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night, to inspect and repair the rail infrastructure. That can be dangerous work that could be oided with drones assisting the crews' efforts.
By using the latest technologies, drones could also start providing higher-value services for railways, detecting faults in the rail or switches, before they can cause any safety problems. To perform these tasks, drones for rail don't need to be flying overhead. Engineers are now working on a new concept: the rail drones of the future. They will be moving on the track ahead of the train, and programmed to run autonomously. Very small drones with advanced sensors and AI and trelling ahead of the train could guide it like a co-pilot. With their ability to see ahead, they could signal any problem, so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time.
What are the statistics in paragraph 2 about?
A. Food variety.
B. Eating habits.
C. Table manners.
D. Restaurant service.
A new report found 46 percent of meals are eaten alone in America. More than half(53 percent)he breakfast alone and nearly half(46 percent)he lunch by themselves. Only at dinnertime are we eating together anymore,74 percent, according to statistics from the report.
How many languages are spoken by less than 6, 000 people at present
A.About 6 800 ?
B.About 3 400
C.About 2.400 ?
D.About 1-200
原文The median number (中位数)of speakers is a mere 6.000, which means that half the worlds languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
本段首句已经揭示----At present, the world has about 6,800 languages.
Which of the following uses the least energy?
A. The box-set TV.
B. The tablet.
C. The LCD TV.
D. The desktop computer.
We may think we're a culture that gets rid of our worn technology at the first sight of something shiny and new, but a new study shows that we keep using our old devices(装置) well after they go out of style. That’s bad news for the environment — and our wallets — as these outdated devices consume much more energy than the newer ones that do the same things.
How much should they pay if a school party of 15 persons book tickets?
A.$135
B.$126
C.$90
D.$84
Schools:school parties of ten or more can book $9 tickets in advance and will get every 10th ticket free.

有些段落,主题句后面有明显引出细节的信号词,如:for example, an example of, first, second, next, last, finally,to begin with, also, ,besides,one...the other, some ,others等
可以通过引出结论的信号词,来确定主题句的位置在段尾,如:so,therefore,thus,consequently,in conclusion,in short,
in a word,to sum up等
直接理解题:who,what,which,when,where,why,how提问,或判断正误;
题干关键词:infer(推断),indicate(象征、暗示),imply/suggest(暗示),conclude(作出结论),assume(定、设想)
a.询问写作目的,选项词常为:explain(解释),prove(证明),persuade(劝说),advise(劝告),comment(评论),praise(赞扬),criticize(批评),entertain(),demonstrate(举例说明),analyze(分析)等
b.询问语气态度,选项词常为:neutral(中立的),sympathetic(同情的),satisfied(满意的),enthusiastic(热情的),subjective(主观的),pessimistic(悲观的),optimistic(乐观的),critical(批评的),douful(怀疑的);hostile(敌对的)等
找出生词与上下文之间的逻辑关系,可借助关联词(because,as,since,for,thus,as a result,of course,therefore等)
这种同义或释义关系常用is,or,that is,in other word,be called
In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N. Y. - Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood - treled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff's granddaughter.
Why did they go then? Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden's book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls' decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy's return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: "When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter."
